"Château Montrose is a winery in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of the Bordeaux region of France.

The wine produced here was classified as one of fourteen Second Growths (Deuxièmes Crus) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.

The name Montrose : according to local legend in St. Estephe Bordeaux , when the heather around the estate was in flower, the hillsides turned pink like rose’. Thus the sailors on the river called the area as Mont Rose.

The 0.68 square km ( 168 acres ) of the estate soil consists of gravel and black sand with a subsoil of clay and marl.

Back in 1932 , the vineyard of Chateau Montrose is planted to originally 60% Cabernet Sauvignon with some of which were planted , 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot with vines that are on average close to 40 years of age.

They are now planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

By 2017, 43% (40 hectares )of their vines are being farmed using organic methods .
The estate planned that before 2025, 100% of Chateau Montrose will be farmed organically.

Château Montrose produces three red wines:
its eponymous grand vin Château Montrose ,
a second wine named La Dame de Montrose and
a third wind ( started in 2016) Le Saint Estephe de Montrose ( also called Tertio de Montrose, which is only made in select vintages )

Montrose wines tend to be deeply tannic when young and can take up to at least 20 years to age and mature during excellent vintages .

By 1815, Chateau Montrose was on its way to being one of the top vineyards in Saint Estephe. However , the estate was not producing wine for commercial sale before 1815, so the Chateau Montrose was the youngest of all the 1855 Classified Growths.

Montrose has been producing one of the best wines in all of Bordeaux for centuries. In fact, the inspiration to purchase the estate by the Bouygues brothers came after tasting the exalted 1989 Chateau Montrose.

The estate ,in 2006 ,was acquired by Martin Bouygues and Thomas Bouygues ( Bouygues Telecom and Bouyges Construction ) .

The 55 million Euros renovations for keeping the estate in green and environmentally conscious ,finished in 2013 ,were designed by the respected architects, Yves Gremont and Bernard Mazieres.

The wines in the estates are usually divided as follows : 40-45% of the harvest is placed in the Grand Vin, which gives you on average, 15,000 cases per vintage ( noted that 30,000 cases were produced in 1982 of the Grand Vin) .The Grand vin production of Montrose now is half of what it was in 1982 .

30-35% of the crop is used for the second wine and the remaining is either placed in the third wine or sold off in bulk.

Chateau Montrose (firm and tannic when young) at its best is powerful, refined, masculine, elegant, complex and delicious . The fruit has a richness and roundness that fills your mouth then polishes and coats your palate.

The wines of Chateau Montrose can age and evolve for decades. One of the best wines in Bordeaux.

A must visit when you are in Bordeaux!"
