Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Abbaye de Saint-Hilaire as a 'wonderful gem' and a 'lovely place to visit,' highlighting its historical significance as the birthplace of sparkling wine and its peaceful, tranquil atmosphere. The affordable entry fee and the opportunity to purchase local wines are also frequently mentioned positives.

"We especially came to visit this small abbey as they invented the first sparkling wine. You can buy their wines and the wines, Blanquette de Limoux from the neighbourhood in the reception. The fee is 6€. The staff were friendly. The downside is it’s not easy to get to the parking place with a camping car, but once you get the parking place, there is a ground space next to it would be ok to park."

Anita Liu

"A wonderful gem, not far from Limoux. A sleepy village amidst the vineyards. Just walk in, pay your 6 euro and enjoy the tranquility of this ancient place. Takes about an hour if you like meditating in a peaceful environment. Lits of oppurtunity to download talking tours but we didn’t bother as the place spoke for itself. A very unusual exhibition of sculptures in one of the spaces. Also a very cool relief from the midday sun. Worth a visit."

Michael Kilkelly

"Lovely place to visit for an hour so. Beautiful cloister, some interesting features such as a beautifully carved sarcophagus, unique 'hidden chair' and a few little artefacts found nearby. Plus it's the home of the first ever sparkling wine, blanquette de Limoux."
