What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Hautecombe Abbey for its stunning architecture, rich history, and serene lakeside location. The audio guide is frequently highlighted as a must-have for understanding the Savoy family's mausoleum and the abbey's past. While some may find the gardens closed, the views from the water and the peaceful atmosphere are significant draws.
"Although Hautecombe Abbey was founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, it's had a chequered history. Apparently it was even turned into a factory making china and other ceramic goods in the early 19th century. Indeed, most of what's visible today dates from the 19th century. There are a few good alabaster pieces but most of the ornamentation has just been copied from medieval stuff situated elsewhere. Frankly there's not much to see here apart from the chapel. However, the site, on the north-western side of the Lac du Bourget, is pleasant enough. There's a gift shop selling mostly Catholic kitsch but no refreshments. The toilet facilities are awful. One lot were completely shut even though we visited at a peak time (Sunday afternoon). The one that was open was so dingy it was necessary to use the torch light on a mobile phone."
