Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Marché de Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron as a prime spot for discovering the island's culinary treasures, particularly its incredibly fresh and affordable seafood and renowned Charentais melons. While many appreciate the vibrant atmosphere and local products, some wish for a greater diversity of farmers and products.

"This marketplace is a must for the cheapest food finds in the island.

First, there is usually a vendor who sells different kinds of tapenade, olives, stuffed bellpeppers, etc. and other similar appetizers.

There is also a stand that sells melon jam and melons. Melons charentais are a MUST to try because this region sells the best kinds, they're also sought after in the whole country. If it's labelled charentais, you can expect it to be naturally sweet and juicy.

Inside the market, you can buy bread for the tapenade you just got earlier. ;) Ask them for recommendations, the baker's stand sell fresh, delicious, and varied kinds of bread. Get yourself some tourteau fromagé. It looks burnt on the top, but that's just how it's made and there is no burnt taste, just a solid top crust with an extremely soft and spongy interior.

There are stalls that sell meat, wine, etc. But one thing you shouldn't skip is the seafood stall. You won't find it cheaper elsewhere, and the quality is amazing. The seafood and fish are fresh. You can buy live, cooked or freshly caught goods, and you can pay a very small fee to have some of your seafood boiled cooked on the spot. They also offer aioli mayo, which I recommend getting if you want to eat some shrimp or bulot (sea snails).

Don't forget the white wine! Enjoy and support the local businesses here!"
