What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Tatihou Island is widely praised as a Norman gem, offering a unique blend of history and nature. Visitors rave about the charming amphibious ferry ride, the well-preserved Vauban Tower, and the surprisingly lush exotic gardens. While some find the seagulls' noise a bit much, the overall experience is described as a beautiful cultural and natural immersion.
"giant succulents (most of the plants here are larger than normal) it is suitable for relaxation, except for the seagulls screeching very much headache. That is right because they have a whole ecosystem and separate area for them on the island"

"When we stand at the dock of the amphibious vehicle that goes to Tatihou Island, we know that the tickets for it can only be found on the quay in a sales point. Everything back again, buy tickets and go back to the feeder. Punctually at 12 noon we are on board and on our way through the oyster beds to Tatihou Island. In 1692 the “Bataille de La Hougue”, a bitter naval battle for the strategic waters, raged here. Several ships of the Sun King's fleet, which had fled to the port of St. Vaast, nevertheless went up in flames by the enemy. As a result, Vauban was commissioned to build a fortified port. The fortress on Tahitou or on the opposite Hougue was built under him or one of his students. After that, the island served as a quarantine station for foreign seafarers and traders during the plague. The last time the Germans built a few gun bunkers here during World War II. However, the island's warlike past quickly fades into the background as you approach the lovingly tended gardens. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the climate here is mild and there are many plants and palm trees that are more familiar from more southern regions."

"Tatihou Island is a true Norman gem, offering a fascinating immersion between history and unspoiled nature. Accessible by a fun amphibious boat, this island is home to a rich military history, notably with its Vauban Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, and the remains of the 1692 Battle of La Hougue, where several of Louis XIV's ships were burned. Beyond these monuments, the maritime gardens and the bird sanctuary (home to more than 150 species of birds) make it a place of discovery and absolute wonder. An unforgettable day!"
