What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the Musée du Gâteau Basque for its authentic experience and the charm of its bakery classes, despite potential language barriers. The historical exhibits and the delicious tasting are frequently highlighted as positive aspects, making it a memorable stop for those seeking genuine Basque culture.
"This was one of the highlights of our trip! We came with our 2 kids (ages 11 & 8) and loved it, from the walk into the museum surrounded by fruit trees, to admiring the historic structures and cooking tools, to tasting delicious basque gateau. Although we do not speak French or Basque and the chef spoke very little English, he was very patient and friendly, and we were able to basically understand most of his presentation (with the help of Google translate and some kind French tourists who helped to translate). What a wonderful experience! Thank you for hosting us!"

"We signed up for the bakery class. The class is supposed to be in French. My wife and I speak 0 French
. My thought was to try and slide by using Google translate. Big failure but the chef is just the nicest guy and was able to translate as we went. You will learn how to make a perfect Basque Gateau and you will be able to repeat it when you get home. This is a family operation and they are just lovely people. The grounds and building are beautiful. It’s way off the beaten track but Google maps will put you right there guaranteed. Take advantage of seeing the surrounding area. They have a tiny guide to route you around. There are cheese making operations wineries and killer little local restaurants. If you are searching for the real deal Basque experience this is where to find it"

"Chef was delightfully amusing and even though our French was quite limited, we managed to communicate. I only wish we'd had more time and could have stayed for the class in the afternoon. I'm itching to make this now that I'm home!"
