What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Mont Saint-Quentin for its stunning panoramic views of Metz and the intriguing historical military ruins. The natural beauty of the woodlands and meadows, coupled with the opportunities for hiking and biking, makes it a popular recreational spot. However, many note the significant lack of signage, which can lead to confusion and getting lost, and caution against entering unsafe derelict buildings.
"Once the location of a vast military complex conceived by the French but actually constructed for the most part during Germany's annexation of Alsace-Lorraine after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. Mont Saint-Quentin is a wonderful recreational facility of woodland contrasting with open meadow, where you are never far away from the haunting ruins of the nowadays derelict fortifications. Signs warn you of the danger of entering or even getting too close to these old buildings, some of which are also apparently home to colonies of bats, which should be left in peace of course.
Not easily accessible by public transport. The best car park to use is probably the one at Col de Lessy which is also not far away from a separate defensive fortification called Fort Plappeville. If you want to explore Mont Saint-Quentin, you can pick up a walking trail from near the Col de Lessy car park, which will take you past the main fortifications and the telecommunications tower before leading you back up around to the road. Takes about an hour.
There are no directional signposts or information boards, despite the fact that the site is well frequented by walkers, joggers and MTB enthusiasts. So if you are unfamiliar with the area, Google Maps might be your best bet for finding your way around. Building work is underway at various locations to make the site safe, maybe this work will also include putting up a few signposts."
