Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the imposing twin towers and the evocative Gothic ruins of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes Abbey, finding it a unique and historically rich site. While some note the lack of complete structures, the sheer scale and the opportunity to learn about its dramatic past are consistently praised. The panoramic views and the potential for stunning photography add to its appeal.

"You can see the Twin Towers of the Abbey of Saint Jean de Vignes from any side you approach towering over Soisson.

They were part of a monastery of Augustinian canons that was founded in 1076 under the rule of Hugues le Blanc, who was an influential lord in the region and also known as lord of Chateau-Thierry. He married Helvide of Soisson which is probably the reason he donated land and money to build the Abbey.

When it was built it was in the Romanesque style but what you see today are remains of later Gothic constructions that lasted to the 17th century.

The two asymmetrical towers, 75m and 80 m high, are still beautiful to watch and give a hint what a splendid building the Abbey once was.

All came to an end with the French Revolution of 14th July 1789 and the period after that."
