St. Etienne Church

St. Etienne's church in Paris. We realized that it was all souls day (Nov. 2) and decided to go into the first church that we ran across to light candles for some of our recently departed friends who believed in that sort to thing. Imagine our shock when we discovered this…

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Cathédrale Saint-Étienne for its stunning medieval architecture, particularly its unique blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles and its breathtaking stained glass windows, often called the 'Lantern of God'. While many find the cathedral beautiful and historically significant, some note it can be cold and damp, and one reviewer had a negative encounter with an employee regarding a bicycle.

"St. Etienne Cathedral - Metz

Built in ochre stone overall between 1235 and 1522, it has vaults culminating at 41 meters, so it is the third tallest cathedral in France after Beauvais and Amiens. Its nearly 6,500 m2 of glass surface has earned it the name "Lanterne du Bon Dieu" and it represents the major part of France but also the largest Gothic glass house in Europe."

"A beautiful work of design and engineering, the meaning of any Church is to welcome travellers, and to show mercy to them, I arrive by bicycle with my panniers, it’s pouring with rain, I enter the church with my bicycle and in by a few minutes moments a arrogant man whom works for the church rushes towards me, he tells me bicycles are forbidden inside the church. I must put it outside, and my bags, all 40 kilograms of them I can bring them into the church. It’s not an electric bike sir! This man hath no place to deter travellers from the house of god. Jesus welcomes travellers.
Five stars for the cathedral
Nil stars for the arrogant employee of the church
To also clarify bicycle travellers are welcome in all church’s and cathedrals across France including Notre Dame in Paris because they actively welcome travellers by bicycle."

Bicycle Touring Pro

"Very interesting but very cold & damp. Looks quite neglected around the sides, but it is well worth the visit. I was most interested in the style of some of the glazed windows. I don't think I have seen any quite like these!"
