What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the magical atmosphere and beautiful scenery of Val sans Retour, calling it a lovely walk full of legend. However, many note that signage can be confusing, leading to potential detours, and the rocky, uneven paths are not ideal for those with mobility issues or young children with strollers.
"Beautiful scenery, nice mix of environment.
Could do with better signage (we thought we got lost more than once) and a bit of a warning that some of the path is not kid friendly/accessible (we ended up helping a family with kids and buggys to go up steep rocks)
For curious explorers, it's a brilliant place!"

"Amazing, full of magic, lovely walk
Walk can be difficult for people with disabilities as you have to climb some rocks
View is amazing"

"Nice walk in the forest with a good view on the highest point of the track. The walking trail is 4km long and easy for anyone to complete (our niece did it in flip flops but I'd still recommend sneakers, you'll be walking in a forest). The orientation signs are a bit confusing or missing at some points in the end so you need ti follow your instinct (recharge your batteries, just in case). It's a nice place to have a walk, maybe grab a cup of coffee in the village before moving on. We took 2 hours for the walk and another hour for coffee."

The Legends of Val sans Retour
Central to the Val sans Retour experience is the Golden Tree, a striking, often golden-hued tree that stands as a focal point. Legends vary, with some suggesting it sprang from Merlin's tear or the heart of a lost lover. Its presence adds a tangible element to the area's magical reputation. Nearby, the Mirror of the Fairies Pond is another key site, its clear waters whispered to have been a dwelling for seven fairy sisters. These natural features, combined with the rich tapestry of Arthurian legends, make Val sans Retour a captivating destination for those who love stories and the natural world.
Navigating the Trails and Terrain
Signage can be a significant issue, with many visitors reporting getting lost or finding the orientation markers confusing or missing. This unpredictability is part of the adventure for some, but it's wise to be prepared. Downloading an offline map on your smartphone or carrying a physical map is highly recommended. Relying solely on instinct might lead to longer, unplanned hikes, as one visitor experienced a 4-hour trek instead of the expected 2.
Accessibility is also a concern for some. The steep, rocky sections make the trail difficult for families with young children, strollers, or individuals with mobility issues. While one reviewer mentioned a niece completing it in flip-flops, this is not advisable for most. Planning your visit with appropriate footwear and navigation tools will ensure you can fully appreciate the magical scenery without unnecessary stress.
Best Times for Enchantment and Photography
For photography, golden hour – the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset – is ideal. The soft, warm light filtering through the dense canopy creates a dreamy, ethereal effect, especially around the Golden Tree. Overcast days are also excellent for capturing the forest's textures and muted colors without harsh shadows. The natural beauty of the area, from the ancient trees to the flowing water, provides ample opportunities for stunning shots.
To experience the magic with fewer crowds, weekday mornings or late afternoons are your best bet. Weekends and public holidays can see a significant increase in visitors, potentially detracting from the serene, legendary feel of the place. Visiting during these quieter times allows for a more immersive experience, letting you truly connect with the legends and the natural beauty of Val sans Retour.
