Reviews Summary

Reviews are highly divided, with some praising the artistic dressage and impressive stables as a 'must-see,' while others found the show repetitive, the seating uncomfortable, and the venue lacking in amenities. Many note it's a classical performance, not a circus, and advise managing expectations regarding comfort and entertainment style.

"All in all, not a particularly positive experience. The horses look miserable and the show is extremely repetitive, verging on dull. I was bored after the first fifteen minutes. The equestrians are not particularly well synchronized either so the performance looked like a disorganized mess. The seating is very uncomfortable (thin mats on wooden benches) and the venue admits babies and infants so expect a lot of crying and noise. The venue is also not climate controlled so if you visit in summer, prepare to boil. The staff is not particularly knowledgeable either. At the entrance to the line, I showed a member of staff my booking confirmation and she let me through only to learn that the confirmation was not sufficient and I'd have to go back to the kiosk to get a ticket printed. I had to leave the line after waiting in it for half an hour only to return with the printed ticket and wait in the line again. Seems to be more a tourist trap than anything else but it's not particularly pricey so if you have time to kill and enjoy this kind of thing, maybe give it a try. If you're only in town for a few days, I'd advise giving it a skip."

"Artistic, impressive and truly spectacular. Combining art of dressage, music and archery in a show lead by female equestrians - truly magnificent.

After the show you get to visit the beautiful stables in the original setting.

Highly recommend if you enjoy classical performances, dressage and are passionate about horses.

Be aware seats are first come first bases, and are wooden banks without back rest.

Also if you’re expecting circus like performance or trick riding this will not fulfill your expectations.

What’s refreshing was that use of phones isn’t allowed during the show, which I appreciated."

"An hour long show performing incredibly difficult dressage movements with many different horses. A horses innate disposition is to be spooked and run, so that fact that they are moving slowly and with great precision is a mastery in training from both the horse as well as the rider (this is also why there are only certain breeds of horses here, as they are more suitable for it)
I have never witnessed this level of skill in North America but it got me inspired to seek out more dressage events near me and learn more. Thank you"

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

The Royal Stables might be a mixed bag for families. While the horses and the visual spectacle can be engaging for children, the long, uncomfortable seating and the prohibition of phones during the show could be challenging for younger attention spans. The lack of climate control also means you need to be prepared for the weather. Reddit

Consider the age and temperament of your children. If they have a genuine interest in horses and can sit relatively still for an hour, it could be a unique experience. However, if you're looking for a high-energy, interactive activity, this might not be the best fit. Arriving early for seats is crucial, and bringing snacks (if permitted) might help keep younger ones content. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

The Royal Stables can be a relatively affordable option compared to some other major attractions, especially if you book tickets in advance. The price often includes both the performance and a tour of the stables, offering good value for the experience. Reddit

However, factor in potential costs for transportation to the venue and any food or drinks you might purchase. The 'budget' aspect is primarily tied to the ticket price itself. Be mindful of the seating comfort and lack of climate control, which might mean you're willing to spend more on other activities for comfort if this experience is less than ideal. Reddit

❤️ Couples & Art Enthusiasts

For couples and those who appreciate classical arts and equestrian mastery, the Royal Stables offer a potentially romantic and sophisticated experience. The elegant dressage routines, set to music, can be quite captivating. It's a chance to witness a refined art form that requires immense dedication and skill. Reddit

Enjoying the post-show tour of the stables can also be a pleasant, shared activity. It’s an opportunity to discuss the performance and appreciate the historical setting together. If you're looking for a unique cultural outing that's different from typical tourist fare, this could be a memorable choice. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Dressage at the Royal Stables

The Royal Stables Grande & Petite Écuries are renowned for showcasing the art of classical dressage. This is not your typical equestrian show; it's a refined performance that emphasizes harmony, precision, and the deep connection between horse and rider. The routines often incorporate elements of music and even archery, creating a multi-sensory artistic experience. Visitors should understand that the focus is on the elegance and control of the horses, rather than high-speed tricks or jumps. Reddit

Many visitors express surprise if they expect a circus-like atmosphere, but those who appreciate classical performances find it truly spectacular. The training involved is immense, highlighting the horses' innate ability to remain calm and precise under direction. This dedication to the art form is what makes the show a unique cultural experience. Reddit

Key takeaway: Go with an appreciation for refined equestrian artistry. The slow, deliberate movements and the bond between horse and rider are the stars of the show. Reddit

Understanding the Venue and Seating

The Royal Stables themselves are often described as beautiful and impressive, offering a glimpse into historical equestrian facilities. However, the visitor experience within the performance area has received mixed reviews. The seating consists of uncomfortable wooden benches without backrests, and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. This means arriving early is crucial for securing a decent spot, but even then, comfort is not guaranteed for the duration of the show. Reddit

Furthermore, the venue is not climate-controlled, which can be a significant factor depending on the season. Visitors in summer may find it very hot, while those visiting in cooler months might feel the chill. Some reviews also mention issues with noise from infants and general crowd management, contributing to a less-than-ideal experience for some. Reddit

Practical advice: Wear comfortable clothing, consider bringing a cushion if you have back issues, and be prepared for a potentially warm or cool environment. Arrive well in advance to get the best possible seat. Reddit

Visitor Feedback: A Tale of Two Experiences

Reviews for the Royal Stables Grande & Petite Écuries are notably polarized. On one hand, many visitors describe the performance as artistic, impressive, and truly spectacular, highlighting the skill of the equestrians and the beauty of the dressage. Some even call it a 'must-see' and better than other major attractions. They appreciate the focus on classical performance and the opportunity to visit the stables afterward. Reddit

On the other hand, a significant number of reviews express disappointment, calling the show repetitive, dull, and even boring. Criticisms include uncomfortable seating, lack of climate control, perceived unhappiness of the horses, and disorganized staff. Some visitors felt it was a 'tourist trap' and advised skipping it if time is limited. The prohibition of phone use during the show, while appreciated by some for focus, is a point of contention for others. Reddit

Balancing expectations: It's essential to understand the nature of the performance – classical dressage – and the venue's limitations (seating, climate control) before booking. If you are passionate about horses and classical arts, you are likely to have a positive experience. If you seek high-energy entertainment or comfort, you might be disappointed. Reddit
