"Fantastic early morning visit today to the gardens. We accessed via the Queen's Gate at 7am and, until gone 9am, had them almost to ourselves. As well as being quiet, they were also nicely misty over the many ornamental ponds and lakes, although the fountains were not active. We were surprised at both the scale of the gardens and how "high rise" they were. On scale, plan on giving them at least a couple of hours - and even more if you're "completist" about these things. On "high rise", from satellite views, we'd assumed they were full of ornamental plants of mostly bush height. Instead, the privacy of the gardens is enhanced by trees and hedges breaking them into nicely isolated "blocks". It's only really immediately near the palace that the low height formal gardens that we'd expected predominated. We didn't visit the palace, but the gardens will be enough for most people - the enormous queues we saw for the former would also recommend in their favour! I should add that you probably need to be comfortable walking (and in comfortable walking shoes) to get the most out of them. They're also not flat, with a hill up to the palace site. But impossible not to recommend."
