"Built in the early 14th century by order of King John II the Good of France, this military fortress was strategically constructed to guard the border between the French Kingdom and the Papal territory of Avignon. Enclosed within its massive stone walls are the remains of the Abbaye Saint-André, a medieval garden, residential quarters, and watchtowers. It’s a hidden gem that blends military history, peaceful nature, and panoramic views. From the northern watchtower, visitors can see the Pont d’Avignon, the Rocher des Doms, the skyline of Avignon, and the silhouetted peaks of the Alps to the east.

"The fort and the abbey are separate tickets, which is lame, and the abbey is closed on certain days, so we didn't get to visit both which was a little disappointing. The fort does offer nice views at least, and there are many historical things to see. To get here is a lot of uphill walking, and many of the stairwells in the fort are very steep and narrow, so be careful with your footing."
