"Great little museum just off the motorway. Museum is small with some interesting finds.
The site is on the edge of a Roman road (via Domitian). The site also includes the remains of an ancient Roman bridge.
Lastly, you can take a quick walk up to the hilltop to see the Roman town.
The museum was free at the time of our visit but the visitor centre has tablets you can use for €5 that have 3D virtual viewer. Absolutely worth it. You can do it on your phone but it is slow."

"What a place. It’s a beautiful touch of history. There is a place where you can see the most ancient Roman road in France built more than 2000 years ago as well as a fantastic view of the local nature. Don’t miss the bridge which has inspired for decades and centuries artists and painters. There is also a free museum if you want to know more about the region."

Kirill Maksimkin

"Free muzeum and walk, nice views, easily accessible from the highway. It's not suitable for strollers because it's quite a walk up but would be great for kids to explore. You can also bring your doggo. I also feel the muzeum has a nice little shop with creative souvenirs."

The Engineering Marvels of Ambrussum

Ambrussum was a crucial stop on the Via Domitia, the first Roman road built in Gaul, connecting Italy to Spain. The site showcases impressive Roman engineering, most notably the Pont d'Ambrussum. While only one arch remains today, it stands as a testament to the Romans' skill in bridge construction, allowing legions and merchants to cross the Vidourle river. This single arch has inspired countless artists and painters over the centuries, drawn to its historical significance and picturesque setting. InstagramReddit

Beyond the bridge, the archaeological site includes remnants of a Roman town and a well-preserved section of the Via Domitia itself. Special events, like the 'AN XIV' reenactments, bring these engineering feats to life. Visitors can witness demonstrations of Roman measurement instruments like the Groma, Chorobate, and Dioptra, and even see scale models of ancient siege engines like the Balista and Polybolos. These events offer a unique, hands-on glimpse into ancient Roman ingenuity and construction techniques. Instagram+2

The Ambrussum Museum, often free to enter, complements the outdoor experience by displaying artifacts unearthed from the site. These finds provide further context about the daily lives, trade, and culture of the people who inhabited this Roman settlement.
