Reviews Summary

Fakarava is overwhelmingly praised for its pristine natural beauty, especially its world-class diving and stunning, uncrowded beaches. Visitors rave about the incredible marine life and the serene, remote atmosphere. Some note the limited amenities and the heat, advising preparedness for a more rustic, nature-focused experience. InstagramReddit

"5 stars not for resorts or amenities or whatever (there's not much) but for being able actually to experience for yourself an island 25 or 30 miles long--and not more than 1/4 mile wide at its widest ... and probably as little as 8 or 10 feet above sea-level, at best ... out in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean. Imagine how vulnerable it must be in a powerful tropical storm!
We called there on a Holland-American cruise, going ashore in lifeboat-tenders, and walked from the pier to the lighthouse. One site describes the lighthouse as being almost 100 years old.
Hardly. It was built in the 1950s. I'm older than it.
Carry water! Put on sunscreen! It's hot, and shade is negligible ... and going over and standing under a palm tree carries a risk, no matter how small, of head injury from a falling coconut.
The (abandoned) lighthouse is interesting to look at, but equally interesting is seeing how different the seaward side of the island is from the side facing the quiet lagoon (which sounded like a pleasant place for snorkeling). One might imagine the stereotypical 'castaway' thrown by the breakers upon this expanse of rock and sharp, broken coral.
Should we visit Fakarava again, we might see if there are bicycles for rent. It would be difficult, on the one and only road, maybe 20 miles in length, with water on both sides, to get lost."
