Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awestruck by the scale and historical significance of Vardzia, describing it as an amazing and beautiful place. The well-organized site and the option of passionate guides are frequently praised. However, some find the caves a bit repetitive, and the steep, narrow passages can be challenging for those with mobility issues or a fear of confined spaces.

"Had a wonderful few hours walking around here as the say was coming to an end. Such an amazing setting. It's only 16GEL to get in and is well worth it. Be ready for the initial 15 min walk uphill before arriving at the complex. If you are tall, it can be tough on the back on exiting as the stairs go down a low tunnel"

Amanda Geismann

"A great experience visiting Vardzia! We took a day trip from Tbilisi. It stopped at a restaurant right across the cave city for lunch and then we went through with the tour. Very well organized, clean and well managed. Our guide was phenomenal (it does make a huge difference when you have a passionate guide!). It took us about 2 hours to go through the cave city with stops here and there. Some passages were steep and narrow so definitely not for the faint hearted.
However, the city, the history, the view - it was absolutely beautiful! I would not miss Vardzia when visiting Georgia! Highly recommend!"

Dessie Hristov

"Very good place and well run. Just loads of hornets! I loved the natural springs giving drinking water. Also the bathrooms are very good. Bus is a must take in the heat!"

The History and Legend of Vardzia

Vardzia is a remarkable medieval cave monastery complex carved into the cliffs of the Erusheti Mountain in southern Georgia. Its construction began in the late 12th century during the reign of King George III and was significantly expanded by his daughter, Queen Tamar, who is considered one of Georgia's most influential rulers. Instagram+1 The complex was designed as a fortress and a spiritual center, capable of housing thousands of monks and soldiers, and was intended to be an impregnable defense against invaders. TikTokInstagram

Legend has it that the name 'Vardzia' originated from Queen Tamar. While playing in the area as a child, she would wander off, and when her uncle called out to her, she would reply, 'Ambroli me!' (I am here!). This eventually evolved into 'Vardzia.' Instagram The monastery flourished for centuries, but earthquakes and invasions eventually led to its decline. Despite this, it remains a testament to medieval Georgian engineering and faith, with over 600 chambers spread across 13 levels, including chapels, living quarters, and wine cellars. TikTokInstagram

Today, Vardzia is a significant historical and religious site, attracting visitors from around the world. While the original monastic community was dispersed, a small group of monks still resides within the complex, maintaining its spiritual significance. Instagram The site is a UNESCO World Heritage tentative list candidate, highlighting its global importance. Instagram

TikTokReddit The sheer scale of the excavation is astounding, with chambers carved deep into the rock face, some reaching up to 13 levels high. Instagram

InstagramReddit The acoustics inside are remarkable, and the intricate artwork provides a profound connection to Georgia's rich artistic and religious heritage. Outside the church, you might find ancient bells and other architectural remnants. Reddit

Navigating Vardzia involves a fair amount of walking and climbing stairs. Some passages can be narrow and steep, so comfortable footwear is a must.
