Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Church of the Transfiguration Laghami for its stunning ancient frescoes and the passionate dedication of its hereditary keykeeper, Rezo. While some note potential for misunderstandings regarding donations, most find the personal tour and the opportunity to support preservation deeply rewarding. The church is a significant historical and artistic gem.

"The church itself it beautiful and worth seeing. As a foreigner you should be careful. The keykeeper opens the door and explains with a few english words as we don't speak georgian or russian. After he wanted to charge 20Gel per person. So better ask and clarify in advance as it seems to be a "tourist-scam for the tour"."

Nicole S.

"We were lucky to receive a guided tour, it was amazing. Very beautiful small church build between the 8th and the 13th centuries, fully painted inside, and with partial paintings still visible outside. The house owner‘s family is taking care of the church for centuries, but unfortunately it is visible that the place might need further preservation and restoration. The owner also hopes for more in-depth art history research in the region before this heritage might disappear."

Anya Shchetvina

"It seems some other reviewers had a difficult experience, so better to explain fully what is happening here.

To see the church, you must call the keykeeper, whose phone number is on the door (this is typical across Svaneti as these churches are considered holy shrines, not touristic objects). Rezo is the keykeeper of the church; his family has been the keykeepers of Laghaami for more than a thousand years. Rezo is also a professional art restorationist and has personally overseen the preservation of this church's unique historical frescoes from their near destruction during the Communist period. Rezo also finances the upkeep and maintenance of this church entirely by himself, without support from the government or the patriarchate. So your donation for his personal guided tour is not a touristic scam - it is directly supporting the preservation of this site for future generations."
