What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Zarzma Monastery is praised for its peaceful atmosphere, stunning natural surroundings, and impressive 14th-century architecture. Visitors appreciate the historical significance, including the ancient inscription on the bell tower, and the opportunity to purchase handmade items. However, many note that extensive renovations currently obscure interior frescoes, which can detract from the experience for some.
"The first church at this place was built in 8th century, while the current one is from 14th century, including the bell tower. On the outer facafe of the tower you can see a 10th-century Georgian inscription inserted in the chapel's entrance arch. The inscription reports the military aid rendered by Georgian nobles to the Byzantine emperor Basil II against the rebellious general Bardas Sclerus in 979. (The church was under facade cleaning to explain the angle of my photos)"
