The Rhine Gate was built around 1200 as the city's main entrance from the Rhine riverbank. It is the oldest double gate in the Rhineland. Only the ground plan and parts of the lower masonry date back to the original construction. The building was remodeled in the 18th century. In 1899, it was given its current form, based on its 17th-century appearance."
