"the new seat of the prince Bishop from 17th century with halls and rooms furnished also in the 18th century like the magnificent Imperial Hall. the visit is only possible with a guide but photos are allowed. amazing Tour"

"Neue Residenz is the elegant palace building at Domplatz. It is a 40 room Baroque complex which houses the State Rooms and State Gallery along with a charming Rose Garden. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm daily and entry is €6 per adult. The Rose Garden can be accessed freely and affords lovely views of the lower section of the historic centre of Bamberg.

Neue Residenz was constructed mostly in the 17th-century and is a fine representation of Austrian-Bohemian Baroque architecture. The State Rooms are highly decorative with outstanding ceiling frescos. The Imperial Hall fresco works by Melchior Steidl (1709) is a masterpiece, probably one of the finest of its kind in Franconia.

The State Gallery is where you find European masterpieces mostly from the Baroque period. This makes for a nice art viewing experience as well. Easy to spend 45-60 minutes between the two, make sure to allow another 10-15 for the Rose Garden as part of your visit as well."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Grandeur: Baroque and Rococo

The Neue Residenz Bamberg is a prime example of Austrian-Bohemian Baroque architecture, constructed primarily in the 17th century. Its opulent interiors showcase the wealth and power of the prince-bishops who resided here. Visitors are immediately struck by the highly decorative State Rooms, adorned with elaborate ceiling frescoes, rich tapestries, and gilded details. The transition from Baroque to the lighter, more playful Rococo style is evident in some of the later furnishings and decorative elements, creating a visually stunning experience.

The Imperial Hall stands out as a particular masterpiece, featuring breathtaking ceiling frescoes by Melchior Steidl from 1709. This hall is often cited as one of the finest examples of its kind in the Franconia region. The sheer scale and artistry involved in decorating these rooms offer a profound glimpse into the aesthetic sensibilities and craftsmanship of the era. Many visitors are captivated by the intricate details and the overall grandeur that permeates every space. InstagramReddit+1

Beyond the State Rooms, the State Gallery complements the architectural experience by housing a significant collection of European masterpieces, predominantly from the Baroque period. This dual focus on architecture and art makes the Neue Residenz a comprehensive cultural destination. The building itself, situated on Domplatz, is an imposing and beautiful structure that contributes significantly to Bamberg's UNESCO World Heritage status. TikTokInstagram

The Enchanting Rose Garden

While the State Rooms and Gallery are the main draw, the Rose Garden of the Neue Residenz offers a delightful and often overlooked experience. This charming garden, typically free to access, provides a tranquil escape from the palace's grandeur. It's meticulously maintained and bursts with color, especially during the blooming season. Instagram+1

Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along its paths, taking in the fragrant blooms and the picturesque views it offers of the lower sections of Bamberg's historic town. It's a perfect spot for a moment of reflection or for capturing some beautiful photographs of the city from a slightly elevated perspective. Many reviewers mention it as a pleasant addition to their visit, providing a lovely contrast to the indoor opulence. Reddit
