Reviews Summary

Reviews for Berlin's food scene are generally positive, highlighting the diverse culinary landscape and welcoming atmosphere of many establishments. While some visitors have encountered issues with unexpected service charges or mediocre food quality, the majority praise the authentic flavors, generous portions, and friendly service. The city's blend of traditional German cuisine and international influences, coupled with modern conveniences like multilingual menus, makes it a compelling dining destination.

"Usually when I am not happy with a restaurant I avoid writing a review, I do not like to harm a business in any way. But this time I will make an exception and I will explain why below.
We visited the restaurant one evening in November, as it was close to the hotel we were staying at. The welcome was very cold, but since we went quite late we justified it. The pleasant surprise was an application on the table that gave you the opportunity to read the menu in your language. However, the food was generally mediocre and mainly the schnitzel I got was not properly fried while its breading was peeling off when I cut each piece.
But what saddened us was when we asked for the bill. The waiter came with the POS and a certain amount for us to pay. After the payment was made, as we were leaving we asked him to bring the bill. There we saw that we had also been charged a certain amount for a tip without our knowledge. The amount (10%) was not large, but we expected to be asked first, as in all the other restaurants we ate in Berlin. We felt that we had been cheated. We do not know if it was the waiter's initiative or the restaurant's policy, but it was an unpleasant surprise."

Understanding Tipping and Payment in Berlin

Tipping in Berlin, and Germany in general, differs from practices in countries like the United States. While not legally mandated, it's a common way to show appreciation for good service. The standard practice is to round up the bill to the nearest euro or leave an additional 5-10% for satisfactory service. It's important to communicate the total amount you wish to pay when the bill is presented, rather than leaving cash on the table after payment. Reddit

Be mindful that some establishments might automatically include a service charge, especially for larger groups. Always review your bill carefully before settling to avoid overpaying or being charged twice for service. Reddit This practice can sometimes lead to confusion for tourists, as highlighted in some reviews where unexpected charges were noted. Reddit

Regarding payment methods, while credit card acceptance is becoming more widespread, it's still wise to carry some cash. Many smaller, traditional restaurants or cafes may still operate on a cash-only basis. Having euros on hand ensures you can comfortably pay for your meals without any issues, especially if you're exploring less tourist-centric areas. Reddit
