The Halde Haniel offers stunning panoramic views, especially during sunrise and sunset. Visiting during these golden hours provides a magical experience, but be prepared for cooler temperatures and potentially more visitors seeking the same breathtaking scenery. Weekday mornings are generally less crowded.

Navigating the 'Totems' and Trails

The iconic 'Totems' by Augustin Ibarrola are a major draw. While the colorful wooden planks are a unique art installation, they have been removed. The site features walking paths and mountain bike trails, so wear comfortable shoes. Check local event listings for any special gatherings or art installations.

Watt is die höchste begehbare Halde vom Pott? Richtig! Haniel in Bottrop.

#hal...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Halde Haniel for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Ruhrgebiet and its unique artistic heritage, even with the partial removal of the 'Totems'. It's a popular spot for hiking, biking, and quiet reflection, offering a blend of industrial history and natural beauty. Some visitors note the diminished presence of the original art installation.

"The Spanish or - better geographically placed - Basque artist AUGUSTIN IBARROLA GOICOECHEA (born in 1930 in Basauri, Bizkaia) is a famous artist who has made a very good name for himself with SCULPTURE, PAINTINGS and LANDSCAPE DESIGN in recent three decades.

At the HALDE HANIEL (approx. 184 meters high) he has formed a spectacular COLUMN-CRESCENT on the upper edge of the spoil heap from the old WOODEN BOARDS of the tracks of the local TRASSENBAHN - each BOHLE is taller than man, each individually sculpted and individually brightly painted!

In addition to their special shape and individual coloring, the planks also offer an associated silhouette that moves like a pointer on a SUNDIAL that is exposed in the landscape and adapted to the crater-shaped tip of the heap.

It is therefore advisable to mark the end points of the shadows with bright glass stones on the longest day of the year, the SUMMER SOLSTICE with the highest position of the sun on June 21st, and then to measure and completely mark the shrinking of the shadows until the WINTER SOLSTICE (Heinrich55)"
