"Just take a look and enjoy.
It was opened on August 11, 1899, by Kaiser Wilhelm II, along with the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Effective June 10, 1939, the city of Dortmund separated its port, which was run as a municipal enterprise, from the municipal administration and transformed it into a public limited company – Dortmunder Hafen AG was founded.
It was severely damaged in World War II, but reopened in 1946 to receive urgently needed building materials for the city's reconstruction. Today, the northern harbor basins (South Harbor, Coal Harbor, and Petroleum Harbor) are one of the largest logistics hubs in Europe, while Speicherstraße at the city harbor is instead used primarily by cultural and gastronomic establishments, which are to be further developed in the future.
