Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the MKM Museum Küppersmühle's stunning architecture, particularly the iconic staircase within the former silos, and its beautiful waterfront location. The thoughtful presentation of modern art, with bilingual descriptions, is also highly praised. However, some find the architecture can overshadow the art, and payment issues with certain credit cards have been noted.

"The curators need to figure out how to match Herzog and de Meuron's Gesamtkunstwerk as the architecture is overpowering the art."

Jeremy Leung

"These spaces beat all the MoMA experiences I’ve had across the US for the following reasons:
⭐Stunning juxtapositions. While the red brick outer walls stand proudly to remind visitors of the industrial past, the minimalistic interiors of plain walls with no frills frame the modern artworks powerfully. The broad horizontal walls are punctuated by slender window slits.
⭐Bridge. The silo, now cut through, houses the bridges that connect the two major wings of exhibition spaces. The symbolism is potent. The whole museum is a bridge of the past and present.
⭐Three artists that I personally liked a lot. Gotthard Graubner, Gerhard Richter, and K.O. Götz.
⭐The translations are done superbly. Reading the wall texts is a joy.
⭐The staff was friendly to me. I had a few chance dialogues with different staff members.
⭐The waterfront location really adds to the experience. The serene ripples are integrated into the visitor experience through the deep-set narrow window slits.

⭐⭐⭐Did I mention the iconic stairwell??? I call it a man-made antelope canyon."

"Very nice museum with loads to see and explore. Some fascinating pieces and I had lots of fun viewing the art. The building itself is also beautiful and great to look at. The ticket I had which let you go onto multiple floors was 12euro.
Great that they had both German and English description boards for the artists, which was useful for tourists. However getting a ticket was difficult as they do not accept MasterCard or Amex, then the machine did not work for my visa which they say they do accept. So I had to walk 10mins to the nearest ATM, annoying for tourists to limit the card reader so much."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Marvel: Herzog & de Meuron's Vision

The MKM Museum Küppersmühle is a testament to the architectural genius of Herzog & de Meuron, who masterfully transformed a historic grain mill into a contemporary art space. Their 1999 conversion of the original Küppersmühle and the subsequent 2021 extension showcase a profound respect for industrial heritage while embracing modern museum design. The extension, in particular, integrates seamlessly with the existing brick structures, creating a cohesive yet distinct architectural statement. Instagram+2

The most striking feature is undoubtedly the intervention within the former grain silos. Here, Herzog & de Meuron sculpted dramatic, monolithic concrete staircases that spiral upwards, creating 'sculptural voids' and transforming the industrial interiors into something akin to an 'antelope canyon.' InstagramReddit This bold move not only serves a functional purpose, connecting different exhibition levels, but also becomes a powerful artistic statement in itself, highlighting the raw beauty of concrete and form. The contrast between the rough, industrial past and the sleek, contemporary design is a recurring theme throughout the museum. Instagram

Visitors often remark on how the architecture itself is a significant part of the experience, sometimes even overpowering the art. Reddit The museum's design emphasizes juxtaposition, with the robust red brick exteriors standing proudly against the minimalist, white-walled interiors. This deliberate design choice ensures that the artworks are presented in a clean, uncluttered environment, allowing them to command attention while still being in dialogue with their unique surroundings. The narrow window slits, a nod to the original industrial openings, offer glimpses of the harbor, further integrating the museum with its waterfront location. InstagramReddit

Navigating the Art Collection

The MKM Museum Küppersmühle houses a significant collection of modern and contemporary German art. While the architecture is a major draw, the curated exhibitions aim to showcase a diverse range of artistic talent. Visitors have particularly praised the museum for featuring works by renowned artists such as Gerhard Richter, Gotthard Graubner, and K.O. Götz, whose pieces are often highlighted for their impact and quality. Reddit

The museum's approach to displaying art is often described as thoughtful, with a focus on creating a compelling visitor flow. The compact display spaces are enhanced by excellent lighting and a clear layout, making it easy to navigate and appreciate each piece. Reddit The bilingual descriptions (German and English) for artworks are a significant plus for international visitors, ensuring that the context and meaning behind the art are accessible to a wider audience. Reddit

While the art collection is a primary reason to visit, it's worth noting that some reviews suggest the architectural grandeur can sometimes compete with the artworks for attention. Reddit To make the most of your visit, consider researching current exhibitions beforehand or focusing on specific artists whose work you are particularly interested in. This approach can help you fully immerse yourself in the artistic offerings while still appreciating the unique setting. TikTok
