Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Andreasstraße Memorial for its honest and impactful portrayal of the GDR's political persecution and the courage of the opposition. The excellent audio guide is a highlight, bringing personal stories to life. While emotionally challenging, it's considered an essential and highly recommended visit for understanding a critical period of German history.

"If you only have time for one museum, go here. There is so much to look at and learn about. Get the audio guide so you can hear people's stories and narrators' descriptions of various aspects of the history. They don't gloss over anything; they honestly share negative information about the DDR and the responses to it. Great that they're so open about a dark part of the city's modern history and the subsequent peaceful end of government oppression."

"The Memorial and Education Centre Andreasstraße in Erfurt is located in a former prison of the East German Stasi. It commemorates political persecution and oppression under the GDR dictatorship and honors the courage of the opposition. The exhibition highlights both the lives of the prisoners and the Peaceful Revolution of 1989."

Marc Ballhaus

"The museum details the imprisonment, propaganda, and uprising against the Stasi in East Germany and then subsequent reunification to a joint Germany.
We had an audio guide (in English) which was excellent. Just a note on its workings. The guide knows which room you are in so the best way to use it is to go to a room, play the guide, wait until it has finished and then move to the next room. The guide will then switch to the audio for that room.

The most shocking for me, as a person born in the late 60's and remembering when the Berlin wall came down, is that a lot of this stuff was still happening during my lifetime.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. It is not an easy place to walk around but I'm glad we did."
