What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Domschatz Essen for its wonderful exhibition of beautiful treasures, particularly the marvelous early medieval crosses and other significant relics. The knowledgeable and friendly staff, along with a nice shop, add to the positive experience. Some note that the museum is not large, but the exhibits are very interesting.
"Absolutely wonderful place exhibiting the many beautiful treasures of Essen minster. The very early medieval crosses donated by the Ottonian abbesses are marvelous, with enamel medallions of the evangelists and the donors too. There's so much more though - reliquaries, monstrances, the Essen sword and crown for the golden Madonna in the minster itself, old manuscripts. The modern treasury windows are excellent too, echoing the ancient artefacts. Some old capitals in the basement as well. And a very nice little shop and knowledgeable and very friendly staff! The bishop's building next door with its 1950s or so ironwork and reliefs is worth a look too. Highly recommended! You can get a joint ticket for the treasury at Werden a short tram ride away as well."
