What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the stunning beauty of the Huldigungssaal, particularly its starry ceiling and intricate windows, calling it a late Gothic jewel. However, the experience is somewhat marred by the viewing box that hinders photography and the fact that tours are primarily in German, making it less accessible for international visitors. The cost of the tour is also a point of discussion regarding its value.
"I took the tour at 11:30. It cost 8 euro. The guide was kind and knowledgeable. Provided the tour is only in german language it would be better to have at least some materials or information tables in English. The beautifully painted Homage room can be only seen through a plexiglass box which is not very good for a pic. I dont understand why they just didn t put some rope instead which would allow visitors to take a nice pic and still they would not step inside. Also as previous review mentioned I dont understand why they destroyed the ossuary!! Such a shame. It was shown to us on the picture. I really think it should have been left as it was. We also have ossuary in Kutna Hora and there are hundred thousands skulls and bones under Paris etc. Its just part of the history. The hall with starry ceiling was lovely and nice how every vitrage window had a story depicted on it."

"Goslar's Marktplatz is home to the Town Hall, which has been in use since the mid-15th century. However, the 16th century is decisive, when the arcades were added to the market side. The showpiece of the town hall is the Tribute Hall, a unique jewel of late Gothic interior design that was fitted out as a council chamber between 1505 and 1520."
Koen
"Too expensive for the little you can see if you don't use the guided tour. The hall can only be seen from a box. You are better off with the photos you can find on internet."

The Architectural Significance of the Huldigungssaal
While the visual splendor is undeniable, the experience of viewing this masterpiece is somewhat mediated. The hall is protected by a plexiglass box, a measure intended to preserve its delicate features. However, this barrier can present challenges for visitors hoping to capture high-quality photographs. Some have suggested that a simpler rope barrier might offer a better balance between preservation and visitor experience, allowing for clearer views and better photo opportunities.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Huldigungssaal offers a glimpse into the civic pride and artistic capabilities of Goslar during the late medieval period. Understanding its function as a council chamber and ceremonial space provides context for its elaborate decoration, making it not just a beautiful room, but a significant historical artifact.
Navigating the Visitor Experience
For those who do not speak German, it is recommended to either come prepared with a translation app or to inquire if any supplementary information in English is available. The cost of the tour, around 8 Euros, is considered by some to be a bit high for the limited access and the photography challenges. Some reviewers suggest that for those on a tight budget or with limited time, viewing high-quality images online might be a viable alternative.
Furthermore, the historical context of the building, including past alterations like the removal of an ossuary (which is now only shown in pictures), adds another layer to the visitor experience. This aspect highlights the ongoing discussions about historical preservation and public access, making a visit to the Town Hall a conversation starter about history and its interpretation.
