Reviews Summary

Helgoland is a unique destination praised for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the iconic Lange Anna sea stack and abundant wildlife like seals and seabirds. Visitors appreciate the car-free environment and the opportunity for scenic walks. However, the long ferry journey and the island's specific appeal mean it's not for everyone, and some find it crowded during peak season.

"Only 3 stars as this is not for everyone and it is a three hour ferry trip each way. The ferry is comfortable and serves reasonable food. We had about 4 hours on the island all on foot of course as the only vehicles are emergency vehicles. We spent most of our time walking around the island. Not all of it but certainly the most scenic and interesting. The coloured sedimentary layers of the cliff face with a sizeable Gannet colony are worth the climb to the top where the bomb craters can also be seen from when the RAF tried to sink the island. There is a tourist information office and a few shops including coffee shops. If this is your sort of thing you’ll really enjoy it. I would say only give up a whole day and Make the effort if it is your sort of thing. If I remember correctly the ferry leaves around 09:00 with the return trip leaving at 17:00 (check timetable) there is parking at the port. I have no idea what the parking charges are as we were on a motorcycle and we were directed to a suitable spot by a friendly chap and not charged. It is our sort of thing so we really enjoyed the whole day. Accommodation is available on the island for anyone wanting more than a day trip. Would we go again? No, only because we’ve been there. For us it was a one off and box ticked."

Martyn Kyson

"That was super nice with all the nesting birds. But I think it is too crowded when you go during season and without Covid restrictions"

Asif Malik

"Best place on the Island and the online must go. Birds Are nesting 50 cm from the path. Spectacular Virus."

A Glimpse into Helgoland's History

Helgoland boasts a rich and often turbulent history, from its strategic importance in naval warfare to its unique status as a VAT-free zone. During World War II, the island was heavily fortified and subjected to intense bombing raids by the Allied forces, aiming to neutralize its strategic value. Evidence of this past can still be seen in the bomb craters scattered across the island, a somber reminder of its wartime role.TikTok

Post-war, Helgoland underwent significant changes. Its unique VAT-free status was established, transforming it into a popular destination for day-trippers seeking tax-free shopping, particularly for spirits, perfumes, and tobacco. This economic aspect has shaped the island's modern identity, leading to its nickname 'Fuselfelsen' (roughly 'moonshine rock') among some Germans.Reddit

Beyond its military and commercial history, Helgoland has a long-standing connection with its natural environment. The island's isolation and unique geological formations have fostered a distinct local culture and a deep respect for the surrounding sea and its inhabitants.
