"I was in Hildesheim today and saw some sights, including the Huckup Monument. It's a monument created in 1905 by the Dresden sculptor Carl Röder, located at the corner of Schuhstraße and Hoher Weg, at the southern end of the pedestrian zone in Hildesheim. It depicts the old Hildesheim legends of the Huckup.
The monument portrays the eerie elemental being, the "Aufhocker" (a term for a creature that jumps on the back), as a goblin embodying a guilty conscience—one that leaps onto the backs of thieves. In the depiction, intended as a warning to all thieves, a young apple thief is the victim of this fateful encounter. The inscription, written in the Hildesheim dialect, reads:
"Young man, put your apples away from the Huckup. The Huckup is a strong little fellow, he holds the devils accountable.""
