"Ok"

Philipp Neubauer

"The construction of this church was commissioned by Duke Henry XIV in 1338. It took a central place in the Freyung district, which had just been marked out and was being built. The church was raised to the rank of a parish in 1369, and the construction itself dragged on for many more years. In the meantime, around 1403, part of the church was destroyed by fire. The northern wall of the main nave collapsed in the fire. Work on its reconstruction and remodeling lasted until the end of the 1430s. At that time, the side naves were extended and the church was surrounded by numerous chapels funded by wealthy and important families and craft guilds. Somewhere between 1470 and 1480, the main nave was vaulted and the church tower was probably completed. The beginning of the 17th century brought renovations, reconstructions and changes, which were in turn eliminated in the 19th century, when neo-Gothic style was widely dominant. Today, we stand before the second largest church building in Landshut. The mighty church tower rises to a height of about 80 meters. The temple is 69 meters long and 31 meters wide. The height of the main nave exceeds 18 meters. In a word, we are dealing with a brick three-nave pillared basilica closed with a crystal vault and surrounded by numerous chapels. The church's equipment consists mainly of 19th-century, neo-Gothic, stained glass windows, altars and sculptures. There is also no shortage of examples of contemporary religious art. Here and there, remnants of 17th-century frescoes have been preserved. The most valuable artifacts decorating the interior of St. Jodok include a sculpture of the Madonna and Child made around 1490. The church's great value is the numerous epitaphs from different eras embedded in the external and internal walls of the temple. This is a memento of the surrounding cemetery, which was liquidated in 1806. The lofty, soaring mass of the church gives the impression of being somewhat forgotten. The square in front of it is overgrown with grass, but it is worth deviating from the beaten and established route of sightseeing in princely Landshut."

A Glimpse into Landshut's History

The construction of St. Jodok Church was initiated by Duke Henry XIV in 1338, marking its central role in the developing Freyung district of Landshut. It was elevated to parish status in 1369, though construction continued for decades. A significant fire around 1403 necessitated reconstruction and remodeling, which concluded by the late 1430s. This period saw the expansion of side naves and the addition of numerous chapels funded by prominent families and guilds. The church's main nave was vaulted, and its tower likely completed between 1470 and 1480. Reddit

Subsequent centuries brought renovations and stylistic changes, with a notable neo-Gothic influence in the 19th century. Today, St. Jodok stands as the second-largest church building in Landshut, a testament to its enduring historical significance. Its impressive dimensions—a tower of approximately 80 meters, a length of 69 meters, and a width of 31 meters—underscore its grandeur. The interior, while largely a product of 19th-century neo-Gothic design, retains elements of earlier periods, including preserved 17th-century frescoes and a highly valued 15th-century sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Reddit

The church's external and internal walls are also adorned with a rich collection of epitaphs, remnants from the adjacent cemetery that was eventually liquidated in 1806. These inscriptions offer a poignant connection to the past, commemorating individuals and families who were part of Landshut's history. The overall impression of St. Jodok is one of lofty, soaring mass, a structure that, despite its historical weight, can feel somewhat overlooked amidst the more frequented sites. Reddit

Architectural Significance and Artistic Treasures

St. Jodok Church is a prime example of Gothic brick architecture, a style prevalent in the region. As one of Landshut's three major Gothic brick churches, it showcases the characteristic use of brick for both structural and aesthetic purposes. The building is a three-nave pillared basilica, distinguished by its crystal vaulting and the surrounding chapels that speak to the patronage of wealthy individuals and guilds throughout its history. The sheer scale of the church, with its towering 80-meter spire, is a dominant feature of the Landshut skyline. Reddit

Inside, the church's artistic treasures are primarily from the 19th century, reflecting the prevailing neo-Gothic style in its stained-glass windows, altars, and sculptures. However, the most significant piece is the sculpture of the Madonna and Child, dating back to approximately 1490, which is considered a highly valuable artifact. The presence of preserved 17th-century frescoes adds another layer to its artistic heritage, offering glimpses into earlier decorative schemes. Reddit

The numerous epitaphs embedded in the church's walls are not only historical markers but also form a unique visual element. These memorials, originating from the former cemetery, provide a tangible link to the lives and legacies of Landshut's past inhabitants. Together, these architectural and artistic elements contribute to St. Jodok's status as a significant historical and cultural landmark in Landshut. Reddit
