Understand its Dual Identity

The Siegestor is a grand triumphal arch, but also a symbol of peace. Originally honoring the Bavarian Army, it was rebuilt with a message of peace after WWII. Appreciating both aspects enriches the visit.

Best for a Stroll, Not a Deep Dive

While historically significant and architecturally impressive, the Siegestor is best enjoyed as part of a walk through Munich's vibrant Maxvorstadt or Schwabing districts. It's a landmark to admire, not an attraction requiring hours.

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Siegestor a glorious and impressive landmark, appreciating its architecture and the symbolic Statue of Bavaria. While not as grand as some other European arches, its historical significance and its transformation into a symbol of peace are highly valued. Many enjoy it as part of a broader exploration of Munich's streets, especially its illuminated nighttime appearance.

"A little disappointed. Too many art pieces on display. Not keen on audio tours. Probably would have gotten more from the audio tour. Nice grounds to walk around. They have set times for the palace tour to keep the crowd limited. Makes for a better visit."

"It’s was nice walk and not hot today.. I come from Thailand and I love Munich and beer here very much"

Watjanar Kansomphrot

"Siegestor is the Victory Gate built on the orders of King Ludwig I of Bavaria between 1842 and 1853. It was built to honor the Bavarian Army that fought in wars against liberation from Napoleon in 1813. The Siegestor was heavily damaged during WWII. The bronze statue of Bavaria riding a chariot pulled by Four Lions is a symbol of the Wittelsbach Dynasty. Really enjoyed our visit to this monument. It is very close to Munich University."
