Reviews Summary

Vogelherd Archaeopark is currently closed and fenced off, leading to significant disappointment among past visitors who lament the inaccessibility and perceived commercialization. While the archaeological significance of the site is recognized, the current state has overshadowed its appeal, with some suggesting alternative natural experiences are preferable.

"They put up a construction fence around my childhood cave and then took off. I wandered around helplessly looking for an entrance, so a driver got worried and stopped.
May Zeus cover this construction fence in thunder and lightning."

Dieter Krötel

"Visits to the cave have been closed since January 1, 2023!

The entire archaeological park has been closed since the beginning of 2023, and the entire grounds, including the Vogelherd Cave, are still inaccessible in summer 2023! It's a shame how much money was wasted to deprive visitors for a few years by fencing off a previously freely accessible cave and spoiling the surrounding landscape with buildings, statues, parking lots with ticket machines, etc.!
The fence surrounding the cave must be removed! And the remaining part of the park must be renaturalized! It's a shame that it will probably take significantly longer to restore it to its former state than it did when the area was commercialized!"

Bernd Pfanzelter

"The park and the museum look quite good from the outside – but not anymore. Both, as well as the associated Vogelherd Cave, have been closed and off-limits since January 1, 2023. The entire area is fenced in. What a shame."

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Vogelherd Cave and its Discoveries

The Vogelherd Cave, located within the archaeopark, is a significant Paleolithic archaeological site. It gained international recognition for the discovery of several small, exquisitely crafted ivory figurines, most notably the Venus of Vogelherd. These artifacts, dating back approximately 40,000 years, are among the oldest known examples of figurative art in the world and provide invaluable insights into the lives and artistic capabilities of early humans. The cave itself offers a glimpse into the ancient environment where these early hominids lived and worked. Reddit

Unfortunately, the cave has been inaccessible to the public since January 1, 2023, due to the closure of the entire archaeopark. This has led to considerable disappointment among those who previously enjoyed visiting and learning about these ancient discoveries. The fencing off of the cave and the surrounding area has been a point of contention for some former visitors. Reddit+1

Despite the current closure, the historical and scientific importance of the Vogelherd Cave and its artifacts remains. These discoveries are crucial for understanding human evolution, early art, and the development of culture during the Upper Paleolithic period. Researchers continue to study these finds, contributing to our knowledge of prehistoric life. Reddit

Visitor Discontent and Park Development

Recent visitor feedback highlights a significant level of discontent regarding the current state of Vogelherd Archaeopark. Many reviews express frustration over the prolonged closure, which began on January 1, 2023, and the subsequent fencing off of the entire area, including the Vogelherd Cave. This has left previously accessible natural landscapes and historical sites inaccessible, leading to disappointment and a sense of loss for the community and potential visitors. Reddit+1

Some visitors have voiced strong opinions about the perceived commercialization of the site, with comments mentioning wasted money on buildings, statues, and parking lots with ticket machines. There's a sentiment that the development has detracted from the natural beauty and the authentic archaeological experience. The call for the removal of fences and renaturalization of the area reflects a desire for a more nature-focused and less commercialized approach to heritage sites. Reddit

This negative sentiment contrasts with the potential of the site as an educational and historical resource. The closure and the way the area has been managed have overshadowed its archaeological significance for many. The hope is that future developments, if any, will better balance preservation, accessibility, and a respectful integration with the natural environment. Reddit
