Nördlingen is lauded for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval charm and unique setting within a meteorite crater. "Nördlingen – the city in the shooting star crater
A unique medieval city, built inside the Ries crater, formed 15 million years ago by a giant meteorite. Its complete walls, narrow streets with colorful houses and the “Daniel” tower of St. George’s Church retain the charm of past centuries. From above, the panorama reveals the reddish roofs perfectly placed in the heart of a cosmic landscape."

"In the green plains of Bavaria, Germany, there is a round town that seems to have come out of a medieval painting - that is Nördlingen, where history and the universe coincidentally met. From above, people can clearly see the perfect boundary of a giant circle, not drawn by human hands, but the remnants of a meteorite collision that occurred 15 million years ago. When the giant meteorite crashed into this land, it created a giant crater with a diameter of about 25 kilometers, called Nördlinger Ries. The temperature and pressure at the moment of impact were so strong that the sand and graphite in the ground were compressed, turning into countless tiny diamonds, so small that the naked eye could not detect them.

Millions of years later, when the Earth had healed from that wound, people began to build a town right in the middle of the ancient crater. Medieval builders used the same meteorite-generated rock to build walls, pave roads, and build houses. Little did they know that in every stone of the church, in every moss-covered wall, there were millions of diamonds sparkling in the sunlight. It wasn’t until 1960 that American geologists discovered the miraculous truth, when they noticed that samples of the stone used to build houses in Nördlingen contained tons of microscopic diamonds — the result of a violent collision between Earth and a distant celestial body.

The heart of the town is St. George’s Church, with its soaring bell tower named Daniel, which visitors can climb to see the entire arc of the meteorite crater. From the top of the tower, Nördlingen appears like a crown of brilliant red brick, surrounded by an ancient wall that has been intact for hundreds of years. Below, winding cobblestone streets, old beer halls, and half-timbered houses intermingle in the peaceful silence of a bygone era.

What makes Nördlingen so appealing is the feeling that time seems to flow more slowly here. Every step through the city gates is a journey through centuries, where one touches the medieval heritage while standing on the remains of a celestial body that once crashed into Earth with enough force to blow up the entire sky. Few would suspect that under those warm red-tiled roofs, every stone contains traces of the universe — as if an entire starry sky had transformed this small town.

Nördlingen is a rare place where the past, the earth, and the galaxy converge. A peaceful town, but every tower, every wall tells the story of life, destruction, and the miraculous rebirth of Earth. It is a place where one understands that, sometimes, the greatest thing in the universe can lie quietly under one's feet.
