Reviews Summary

Visitors find St. Erhard Basilica to be a beautiful and uniquely decorated church with a distinct Romanesque interior. Its historical significance, particularly the burial of St. Wolfgang, is a major draw. While the basilica itself is highly recommended, opinions on the adjacent castle are mixed.

"the Basilik itself dated originally to the 8th century, but destroyed and rebuilt over the years. it was also part of the big complex with the Thurn castle and the royal stables along side the old monastery and the tower. the interior is old dated to that romanesque era, the altars and the Burials are well decorating the area. underneath the church you will find the Burial of St. Wolfgang which had a large impact on the Building and on the religious behaviour back then."

The Basilica's Rich History

The St. Erhard Basilica boasts a history stretching back to the 8th century. While the original structure has been rebuilt over the years, its current form reflects significant historical periods. It was once an integral part of a larger complex that included the imposing Thurn castle and the functional royal stables, alongside an old monastery and a prominent tower. This interconnectedness highlights the basilica's central role in the region's past.

The interior of the basilica is a testament to its Romanesque origins. Visitors can admire well-decorated altars and burial sites that contribute to the area's unique ambiance. The presence of these elements offers a glimpse into the artistic and religious practices of bygone eras. The overall feeling is described as 'interesting' and 'different,' setting it apart from more conventional churches. Reddit

A particularly significant aspect of the basilica is the Burial of St. Wolfgang. This site had a profound impact on both the construction of the building and the religious behavior of the community during that time. Exploring this area provides a deeper understanding of the saint's influence and the basilica's spiritual importance. Reddit

These structures likely served complementary roles to the religious site, reflecting the power and daily life of the past.

While the basilica itself is widely praised for its beauty and unique atmosphere, one traveler's tip advises against visiting the castle.
