"The Hegereiterhaus or gamekeeper's house was built in 1591. The house was the hospital kitchen and was the living quarters of the hospital's chief administrator. It was designed by the famous architect Leonhard Weidmann who also designed the Spitalbastei or hospital bastion (the strongest fortification in the city) located just down the street."

Kent Hunt

"It is actually the hospital attendant's house and only became known as the Hegereiterhaus much later. Built in 1591, it is a small gem of the city."

Architectural Significance

The Hegereiterhaus Spital, built in 1591, is a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It was designed by the renowned architect Leonhard Weidmann, who also contributed significantly to the city's fortifications, including the Spitalbastei. The building's most distinctive feature is its pointed tent-shaped wooden roof, a design that was quite unique for its time and still stands out today. This architectural element is a testament to the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of the late 16th century. Reddit

Originally, the lower level of the Hegereiterhaus served as the hospital kitchen, a vital function for the infirmary it was associated with. The attic space above was utilized as the residence for the administrator of the infirmary's properties. This dual purpose highlights its practical importance within the historical Spitalhof complex. While it later became known as the Hegereiterhaus (gamekeeper's house), its primary historical function was tied to the hospital's operations. Reddit

Despite its relatively small size, the Hegereiterhaus Spital is considered a 'small gem' of the city. Its preservation and unique design make it a point of interest for those who appreciate historical architecture and the less-obvious historical sites. It offers a glimpse into the functional and residential aspects of historical institutions like hospitals. Reddit
