What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Grunstein Via Ferrata for its stunning Watzmann views and varied routes, offering a good challenge for many. However, the experience can be marred by significant crowds and heat on sunny weekends, leading to delays. Inexperienced climbers and inadequate gear are common issues, and the mountain hut operates on a cash-only basis.
"It is a great tour and I would like to give it 5 stars, however the traffic jam at the sunny weekend takes away one star. We saw several inexperienced tourist groups with wrong shoes (sneakers and flat street shoes) as well as no gloves and wrong clothes. They got stuck on the rock and had to climb down after much struggle. The restaurant on the way back takes cash only. The way back down to Königssee is not for inexperienced tourists neither. In general, it is a really nice tour with great Watzmann view if you can handle the waiting and traffic jam with tourists. I would rate the easy route as B/C, much easier compared to other C routes."

"Nice and beautiful route, we did it with 30+ degrees temperature. We are experienced climbers and we were having a hard time making it to the end with the heat (almost no shadow). Bring lots of water and sunscreen. From the parking and back it took us 5 hours, bring some cash with you, on the top you can find a Hütte with food and drinks. (Cash only)"

"Very nice via Ferrata! Not so difficult, the E elements are covered with clasps.
Recommended."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider tackling the via ferrata on a weekday morning to avoid the largest crowds and potential delays caused by inexperienced climbers. If the more difficult sections seem daunting, remember there's a trail to the summit that bypasses the toughest parts, allowing everyone to reach the top. The stunning views from the top are a great reward for the whole family.
💰 Budget Travelers
Pack your own food and plenty of water to avoid purchasing expensive items at the mountain hut. While the hut offers refreshments, bringing your own sandwiches and snacks will significantly cut down on expenses. Focus on enjoying the natural beauty and the challenge of the climb, which are the main attractions and cost nothing.
🧗 Experienced Climbers
To optimize your experience, aim for early morning on a weekday to avoid the crowds and potential bottlenecks caused by less experienced climbers. Consider combining the via ferrata with other hikes in the Königssee area for a more comprehensive alpine adventure. Ensure your gear is in top condition and you're prepared for the weather, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
