What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Röthbachfall as a spectacular destination, well worth the journey involving a boat trip and hike. The dramatic scenery of Königssee, Obersee, and the waterfall itself are highlights, though the hike's difficulty and potential for slippery conditions are noted. Some mention the waterfall's flow can be minimal in dry summer months.
"After taking the delightful boat trip the length of the Konigsee to Salet, and walking the length of the Obersee, and a little further you will reach the foot of the waterfall. A little under an 2 hour round trip for a seasoned walker, with decent footwear on. Expect wet feet if not wearing mid or high gortex walking boots. Well worth the hike!"

"This is a very beautiful place to visit. It takes some hours to get here, but it's well worth it. We took the boat from Königsee and walked all the way to the waterfall. The walk here is also very nice with a lot of nature to appreciate. Even on a cloudy day, it was incredible, and I will definitely be coming back on a sunny day."

"Gorgeous place, totally worth the hike! The views are beautiful trough the whole route. We saw a wild goat on the way, which made it even better. And lots of cute cows, of course😀"

Yes, there are several parking lots available in Schönau am Königssee, near the boat departure point. Be prepared for parking fees, which can vary depending on the lot and duration.
Yes, you can reach Königssee by public transport. Take a train to Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof and then a local bus (e.g., line 841) to Königssee.
The boat trip on Königssee is a scenic experience using quiet electric boats. It offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the clear, emerald-green water.
The hike is considered moderate. While mostly flat along Obersee, the path can be rocky and slippery, especially after rain. It's not suitable for very young children or strollers.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
You need to purchase tickets for the electric boat trip across Königssee to Salet. There is no separate entrance fee for the Röthbachfall itself or the hike.

Discounts may be available for children, families, or groups. It's advisable to check the official boat company's website or inquire at the ticket counter for any applicable offers.
🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience

The hike is not ideal for very young children or strollers due to the rocky and potentially slippery terrain. Older children who can manage a moderate hike might enjoy it.

A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the scale of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape. A polarizing filter can help enhance the colors of the water and sky.
Yes, the hike leads you to the base of the waterfall, allowing for close-up shots. Be prepared for mist and spray, especially when the waterfall is powerful.
Morning light can be beautiful for the lake and mountains. However, the dramatic mist and spray can create unique photographic opportunities even on cloudy days.
A tripod can be useful for capturing longer exposures, especially in lower light conditions or to smooth out the water's movement. However, the hike might make carrying one cumbersome.
