Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise St. Nicholas Church for its stunning and unique powder pink interior, the impressive astronomical clock, and its historical significance as the oldest church in Stralsund. The modest entry fee is generally considered well worth the experience, though some note that it can get crowded, especially on Sundays.

"St. Nicholas Church (German: Nikolaikirche) is the oldest of the three major parish churches of Stralsund in Germany. It was dedicated in 1279 to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors. St. Nicholas Church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002. The construction began as a hall church with a tower in 1234. After 1270, the unfinished St. Nicholas Church was rebuilt as a basilica, following the design of St. Mary's Church in Lübeck. The construction of the western tower began in 1300. In 1314, the council decided to build two towers. Around 1350, the construction of the nave between the two towers was completed. A fire in 1662 destroyed the wooden spires of the towers. In 1667, the southern tower was provided with a Baroque dome.
The first attempts to renew the church's medieval colour scheme were made in 1891. Remains found near the organ were used as an example. The Berlin painter August Grimmer painted the leaf decorations in the arcades of the choir. The nave, the aisles, and tower chapels were painted by the Linnemann brothers from Frankfurt (wiki)."

Architectural Evolution of Nikolaikirche

St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) in Stralsund boasts a rich architectural history, beginning as a Romanesque hall church with a tower in 1234. After 1270, it was significantly rebuilt as a basilica, drawing inspiration from St. Mary's Church in Lübeck. The construction of its distinctive western tower commenced around 1300, with a later decision in 1314 to build two towers, creating the impressive nave between them by approximately 1350. Instagram

The church's evolution continued with additions and modifications. A fire in 1662 tragically destroyed the wooden spires of the towers. In response, the southern tower was adorned with a Baroque dome in 1667, adding a distinct stylistic element. The interior also underwent significant aesthetic changes, with medieval color schemes being renewed starting in 1891, featuring leaf decorations and vibrant paintings that contribute to its unique visual appeal today. Instagram

These layers of architectural styles, from its Gothic basilica form to the Baroque dome and the later interior renovations, make Nikolaikirche a fascinating study in historical building techniques and artistic trends. Its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List underscores its importance as a preserved example of Hanseatic brick Gothic architecture. Reddit
