What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the striking architecture of the Vitra Geodesic Dome and the overall Vitra Campus, highlighting its unique design and beautiful grounds. However, some express disappointment with the accessibility of permanent collections, noting that website descriptions can be misleading and that only temporary exhibitions are readily available.
"I was a bit disappointed. The website says there is a permanent exhibition with 400 objects in the Schaudepot. Something like that does exist, but it’s not accessible to visitors – not with any ticket, not even with the combined one. It would be good to adjust the website description so that it doesn’t mislead visitors.
For individual visitors, even with the combined ticket, only three temporary exhibitions are accessible. They are small and quite specific. The staff confirmed that there is no permanent exhibition, only temporary ones.
What looks like a permanent collection (you can see it through the glass, as in the photo) is actually stored on shelves, sorted by type: chairs here, lamps there. Maybe it’s only accessible with a guide. Across the whole campus, only three temporary exhibitions are accessible.
You can take an architecture tour of the campus, but I think it’s more interesting to do this from the VitraHaus balcony, where you can see the architecture of the buildings as a whole. When you are down on the ground next to them, it’s not so easy to really feel the forms and the architect’s ideas.
VitraHaus itself is a shop (free entry). Inside you’ll find nice design items, especially the “elephant” stools: the smallest made of plastic, the larger ones of wood. IKEA has been getting more expensive lately, especially the Stockholm collection, so it’s worth stopping by VitraHaus to take a look. Some of the items are not far from IKEA in price and are quite interesting in terms of design.
The campus grounds are free to walk around and include a beautiful garden.
Tip: Always check in advance which exhibitions are running – that will help you decide if the visit is worth it."

"Reminiscent of Buckminster Fuller domes, but in an interesting translucent fabric. There spaces can be equal measure dramatic and disconcerting."

"When we were here today with our guided tour, we couldn't enter the building, which was constructed between 1975 and 2000 according to Richard Buckminster Fuller's design, for safety reasons, because exhibition structures for Art Basel were being dismantled there. But even from the outside, it's a spectacular sight: like an oversized igloo with a whopping 480 square meters of interior space!"
