Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Schabbell Museum for its comprehensive 800-year historical coverage, engaging interactive exhibits, and excellent English translations. The affordable entry fee and pleasant inner garden are also frequently mentioned positives. However, some reviewers note that deeper historical periods like Nazism and the GDR are presented superficially.

"Worthy history museum, quite interactive, with a neat inner garden & changing collection of exhibits. 2-3 hrs for a visit recommended.

Much obliged to the Schabbel museum & Projekt 360 for the great opportunity to organize excursions for expats and refugees in 2021/2022.

Bis demnächst!
Maritime Grüße aus Hamburg"

"The city museum is located in the home of the mayor which is transformed to a world class museum with museum shop and garden. The exhibit is children friendly till the period of the Swedish occupation, then the exhibition becomes superficial and avoiding any controversial issues. There is nothing about women in Wismar, the exhibition is more like a factory history. The history of Nazism is hardly present, the Holocaust is missing. The painful history of the GDR is presented without any depth. Strongly recommended but if you want to know how the two totalitarian regimes ran the City from 1933 till 1989, go somewhere else. The collapse of communism and the Westernization of the East Germany are also missing."

"A must visit in Wismar.
The museum was founded in 1863 and it presents 800-year history of the city, manifesting the lives of princes, citizens and craftsman. The museum includes 3 exhibitions, history of the city, the house of Henrich Schabbel, and the transparent or glass museum. It presents about 2000 artifacts such as original parts of medieval ships. In the restoration laboratory you can experience the work that is done behind the scenes in museums. It's especially interesting as it is a combination of art and science. There are numerous interactive elements in the museum which servs as an attractive educational element for both adults and children.
Also there is a section you can try kimono. We took the liberty and took a few pictures with my sister. It was an amazing experience.
The museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm. The entrance fee for regular ticket is 6 € and reduced ticket such as for students and seniors is 4€. Meanwhile, the visit is free for children up to 16 years old."
