What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking coastal scenery and the unique charm of the historic train ride. While the journey is slow and can be hot in summer, the picturesque views and nostalgic experience are highly recommended. Booking tickets in advance is essential due to limited services.
"Amazing experience with an amazing scenery of the coast side of the city. Making a reservation is quite difficult since there are only a few rides per week. During the summer it can get really hot so be prepared. There will be one stop where people can buy a drink or go to the restroom as well. Overall, i would recommend this just for the beautiful scenery alone."

"The ride is quite long (90min) and very slow (avg. 10km/h for 15km)
It's not super comfortable but the view is great!
If you can, just go for a trip in one direction.
Definitely buy tickets in advance!"

"I had an amazing day taking this charming train up to Milies and back, it's such a fun experience and the views are incredibly beautiful! It’s a popular thing to do so I definitely recommend booking tickets online in advance. If you show up at the train hoping to buy a ticket on the day, there’s a good chance you’ll be disappointed. When I took the journey in late October, there was only one journey per day (10am departure from Ano Lechonia to Milies, with a 3pm returning train back to Ano Lechonia). There’s isn’t much to do in Milies itself, it’s just a village in a beautiful setting, with just a few cafes, shops and restaurants. If you’re fit, you can walk up and down the hills of the village and admire the stunning views. The train ride itself is the really extraordinary part."

Tips for families: Book tickets well in advance, especially during school holidays. Pack plenty of snacks and drinks, as options on the train are limited. The Historic 'Moutzounara' Train
The journey itself is a significant part of the experience. It's not about speed; it's about soaking in the atmosphere and the stunning natural beauty of the region. The train winds its way through olive groves, past traditional villages, and offers glimpses of the sparkling Aegean Sea. The slow pace allows passengers to truly appreciate the landscape and the engineering marvel of the railway itself.
While the train ride is the main draw, the destination, Milies, is also worth exploring. This charming village offers a glimpse into traditional Pelion life, with its stone houses, quaint squares, and local tavernas. Visitors can enjoy a coffee or a meal before catching the return train or arranging for onward travel.
Planning Your Scenic Journey
Consider the duration of the trip. The 15-kilometer journey takes approximately 90 minutes, traveling at a leisurely pace. This slow speed is what allows for the incredible scenic views, but it also means the overall experience is time-consuming. Some travelers opt for a one-way ticket to Milies and then arrange for a taxi or other transport to return to Ano Lechonia, allowing them more flexibility to explore Milies or other parts of Pelion.
When traveling during the summer, be prepared for the heat. While the train offers an open-air experience, temperatures can soar. Bringing water, wearing light clothing, and using sun protection are highly recommended. The train does make a stop where refreshments can be purchased, but it's always wise to be self-sufficient.
