Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art Athens for its stunning collection of masterpieces, particularly its Impressionist and modern art. The elegant architecture and serene atmosphere are frequently highlighted as major draws, offering a sophisticated and enjoyable cultural experience. Some visitors note that certain temporary exhibitions can be quite popular, leading to moderate crowds.

"This was v close to my hotel and what a treat to see such a stunning new gallery in Athens. Along with furniture they lived with, art is displayed on a rotational basis from their collection, which was gifted to the nation. The building/ rooms have clean contemporary style and the whole experience is thrilling. It compliments the Ancient Civilisation which Athens is famous for. This gallery makes a wonderful addition to heritage in Greece."

"We have been members of this museum for a couple of years. Our most recent visit was May 2025. We went specifically to see a temporary exhibition of the Greek- American painter Nicholas Kovtaxis (Νικόλας Κονταξής).

The museum is four floors, each with a different theme, such as contemporary, Greek, etc. Two of the floors are more or less static exhibits, but the other floors have rotating exhibits. The museum is rarely crowded so it is possible to get close to the pieces and spend as much time as one wishes contemplating pieces. The galleries have seating available for contemplation.

The cafe is huge and has a beautiful atrium that feels like being outside, but with the comfort of climate control. The stairs have art nooks and for me, some of the larger pieces are well viewed from the stairs.

The bathrooms are spotless and impeccable. The gift shop has a decent selection of gift items, jewelry, mugs, cups, notebooks, prints, books and much more. We usually spend 2-3 hours per visit. Membership includes invitations to many events throughout the year centered around the collection and geared towards both adults and children."

"Visited early afternoon on a Thursday, it was very quiet, maybe 30 visitors max., so not a very popular place to visit. But for €15 to visit the permanent and temporary exhibits, it’s not expensive. Well designed building and well staffed, all speaking English. There are free maps and audio guide available if you want them. Restaurant was completely empty. Floor 3 was closed. The art was semi interesting, only some by well known artists impressed me. The contemporary art could have been painted by a child using their fingers. Overall I was disappointed and spent less than 30mins walking around the building"
