What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently impressed by the sheer scale and engineering marvel of the Corinth Canal, often describing it as a unique and breathtaking sight. While some find it a quick, worthwhile stop on a larger itinerary, others suggest it might not warrant a dedicated trip if it's out of the way. The convenience of car access and nearby dining options are frequently praised.
"Had an amazing boat ride through the Corinth canal both ways. Only €22 each on Anna 11 cruises. Lasted about an hour or so and went from the quay on the Athens side of the canal. It's incredible how it was dug and dynamited out of the rocks. Very steep sides in places with road and rail bridges spanning it.
Well worth doing."

"We visited the Corinth Canal and were absolutely amazed by its breathtaking views — it’s a must-see both for its visual impact and historical significance. Standing on the bridge and looking down into the narrow, deep waterway is truly unforgettable.
There are several nearby restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy a meal or a drink at relatively reasonable prices. It’s a great spot to take a break, enjoy the scenery, and soak in the atmosphere.
For thrill-seekers, there’s also the opportunity to go bungee jumping right over the canal. At around €100 per person, it’s definitely on the pricier side, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that adds a real adrenaline rush to your visit.
Parking was easy and the area felt tourist-friendly. I’d highly recommend stopping here if you’re passing through the region — even a short visit is worth it!"

The Engineering Marvel of the Corinth Canal
Historically, the Corinth Isthmus was a significant land bridge, and ancient Greeks even devised a paved trackway called the Diolkos to drag ships across it, avoiding the long and dangerous journey around the Peloponnese peninsula. The modern canal was a monumental undertaking, involving extensive excavation through the hard limestone. It significantly shortened shipping routes for vessels traveling between the Aegean and Ionian Seas.
Despite its impressive engineering, the canal faces challenges. Its narrowness limits passage to smaller vessels, and it is prone to landslides and closures for maintenance. Recent efforts have focused on stabilizing the walls and ensuring its continued operation. Visiting the canal offers a unique opportunity to appreciate this remarkable feat of engineering and its historical significance.
Visiting the Corinth Canal: What to Expect
The most common way to experience the canal is by car, stopping at the viewpoints located at either end. These overlooks provide a dramatic perspective of the canal's scale and the sheer height of its rock walls. Some visitors enjoy having lunch or a coffee at the restaurants situated near the canal, offering a unique dining backdrop.
For a more immersive experience, consider taking a boat tour that navigates through the canal. This allows you to appreciate the engineering up close and feel the unique atmosphere of passing through such a narrow waterway. Always check the Corinth Canal Authority's website for the latest information on transit status, potential closures, and available boat tours before your visit.
