What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Venetian Wells of Gavalochori to be a fascinating glimpse into historical Crete, appreciating the authentic, unmanicured nature of the site and its historical significance. However, some feel the lack of maintenance, clear information, and basic facilities detracts from the experience, suggesting improvements could enhance its appeal.
"We were visiting the village of Gavalochori and the guide book noted these Venetian Wells. Its a little walk from the village, but you could stop by if you were driving.
There are supposed to be 24, but the first few wells have been covered with concrete caps, but there are still quite a few to see. It was here at these wells that the villagers met to water their animals, and share local news. Women did their washing here, building fires to heat the water.
Be careful if you are visiting with children as the wells are open and deep.
There a few benches to sit on, if you can get to them as its a bit overgrown, but a shady spot nonetheless.
There is a creek running alongside the wells, and a Venetian bridge spanning.
It would not be wheelchair friendly. There are no toilet facilities."

"This is just a fascinating place to visit, not an official tourist attraction. There's no facilities, cost or guide. But a great insight into historical Crete.
The big let down was people who hadn't anticipated this and left wet wipes 🤢"
Laura Massey-Pugh
"The venetian Wells of Gavalochori. With a couple benches, a lined path and a proper plaque with info would be much more pleasant experience. I loved seeing the historic place but the local community should spruce it up a little."
