What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the exceptional hiking trail leading to Kournas Cave, highlighting its scenic beauty with cypress trees and wildflowers. While the cave itself is described as simple, its historical significance as a former shepherd's refuge is appreciated. The hike requires moderate effort and preparation for rocky terrain and potential weather changes.
"Rode within around 300m on a motorbike to a trail that ends above and further east than the cave. This trail is accessible by 4wd as well and end approximatey 300m from the cave. This might sound close but its very technical to get the cave and you need to do a fairly I tensile rock scramble down and up. My advice is take the walking track for an easy route otherwise try the option I took. Basically head west down the rocky cliffs and then towards the coast straight down the rocky valley until you hit the walking path that everyone else is talking about. There are many goat tracks going directly west across the rocky vallys - do not follow these. The location on google maps is precise."

"The cave is easily accessible by a 1+- hour path from Agios Ioannis, large at the entrance and inside, without continuing anywhere deep, in the previous century it was definitely used by shepherds, something you understand immediately upon entering the cave. The general decoration of the area is nice."

"As inexperienced hikers, it took us 1.5 hours each way from the parking lot at the village hall. There are enough blue markers to help you navigate. Watch out for rockfall near the cave. It's also a good idea to have rain jackets and/or a change of clothes in your car, as you can expect rain at this altitude.

There's also a parking lot further up. We didn't use it due to the gravel and oncoming traffic."
