Ever seen a monastery carved into a cliff glowing in golden sunrise light? ✨   High above the Aegean, hidden on the rugged cliffs of Amorgos, the Monastery of Hozoviotissa feels like it was placed between heaven and sea. As the first rays of the sun paint the white walls in gold, silence wraps the island, so peaceful, it feels almost unreal. 🌅   The Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery is a Greek Orthod...

Reviews Summary

Visitors are overwhelmingly awestruck by the Hozoviotissa Monastery's dramatic cliffside location and unique architecture, calling it a 'transcendental place' and a 'must-see'. The warm hospitality of the monks, offering water and sweet raki, is frequently praised. However, the strenuous climb up numerous stairs is a significant challenge for some, especially in hot weather.

"I have no words to describe this Monastery. It is truly a remarkable testament to the construction of its time. It is literally just on the side of a cliff. It was a slow and steady climb up the stairs, with lots of stops to admire the view. You need to dress modesty. Shoulders and knees covered, but there are plenty of skirts pants and scarfs to borrow before entering the Monastery. The entrance door is short, so mind your head. The Monks inside where extremely friendly and offered a much needed glass of water and a glass of the sweetest raki I have ever tasted. The taste reminded me of a spicy fruit cake. Delicious. There is a lovely room to sit and enjoy your drinks, before heading back down the stairs. Definitely a must do. If your not very fit, take your time and give the stairs a go, it is definitely worth the effort."

"An absolute MUST SEE. For me, this has been a dream since I first saw the footage in the movie The Big Blue. The Monastery of Chozoviatissas is a transcendental place on Earth. I now have visited it twice with the same astonishment and awe. Make sure to take your time and inhale the very special atmosphere in and around the Monastery."

"Honestly an amazing experience!!! The most important landmark in Amorgo, in my opinion. Even if you're not religious this place is definitely a work of art in itself. There is also a small museum in the church, that has a ticket fee of 3€. I recommend the visit as it adds to the historical value of this place, as it goes back centuries. Lastly the view is amazing and there are plenty of cute cats there you can pet as well. I recommend visiting the Agia Anna beach after the visit in Hozoviotisa, to cool off from all the stairs."

The Monastery's Remarkable Construction

The Monastery of Hozoviotissa is an architectural marvel, seemingly defying gravity as it's built directly into the sheer face of a 300-meter-high cliff. Its construction began in the 11th century, with significant renovations and additions occurring over the centuries. The monastery is characterized by its narrow, multi-story structure, with rooms and chapels stacked vertically, following the contours of the rock. This unique design is not only visually stunning but also a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of its builders. Instagram

The monastery is organized into eight levels, each with its own purpose, from living quarters to chapels and storage areas. The sheer scale and the precariousness of its location make it a truly unforgettable sight. Instagram

This architectural feat is deeply intertwined with the monastery's spiritual significance. It was built as an ode to the Virgin Mary, Panagia Hozoviotissa, the patron saint of Amorgos. The dedication and effort poured into its construction reflect the profound faith of those who built and maintained it over nearly a millennium. Instagram
