What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Ierapetra Seafront Promenade offers a pleasant coastal walk with numerous cafes and shops, and free parking. While some visitors found the beach average and noted issues with playground maintenance and persistent shopkeepers, many enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and sea views, especially during sunset.
"Nice place for a walk next to the Mediterranean Sea, especially on those stretches, where trees provide some shade. Otherwise the afternoon sun can be very hot.
I enjoyed a chat with two friendly shop owners and the cafes and restaurants at the promenade. Also, parking was for free.
However, during my visit, the playground was in a relatively bad shape, the public toilet was only partially functional and Europe's southernmost island was not cleared for visitors by the public authorities. That was a bit disappointing. Still enjoyed my trip to Ierapetra, though 🌞"

"Average beach in a large tourist town. Beech front is crowded with restaurants and shops selling tatty souvenirs, very pushy shop keepers won't leave you alone if you look into the shops, even after saying we were just looking several times they came back to push a sale several times."
Gavin Lipscombe
"So if there is only one beach to go to while you visit Crete, this isn't it. No way. In fact, I don't understand anybody holidaying in Ierapetra. It just isn't attractive and in no way reflects the beauty of Crete. Having said that, some good shops and supermarkets but then move on swiftly."

Exploring the Promenade's Atmosphere
However, it's worth noting that the promenade can get quite hot under the strong afternoon sun, so seeking out shaded areas or planning your visit for early morning or late afternoon is highly recommended. Some visitors have also pointed out that while the promenade is a central point, the adjacent beach is considered average compared to other stunning beaches in Crete, and some facilities like playgrounds might be in need of maintenance.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the promenade remains a key attraction for its accessibility, free parking, and the simple pleasure of walking by the sea. It's a place to soak in the local ambiance and enjoy the coastal views, especially as the sun begins to set, casting a warm glow over the water.
Shopping and Dining Experiences
When it comes to dining, the promenade offers a plethora of choices. From traditional tavernas serving Greek specialties to more contemporary cafes and restaurants, there's something for everyone. Enjoying a meal or a drink with a view of the sea is a quintessential experience here.
It's important to be aware that some shopkeepers can be quite persistent in trying to make a sale. While generally friendly, they might approach you multiple times even after you've indicated you're just browsing. A polite but firm 'no thank you' is usually sufficient to move on.
