"We preferred this to Samaria gorge ( which we also loved!!)
Fun, beautiful and shady!
The first mile or so is a bit more open, then you proceed the a shady 2-3 miles of boulder climbing.
We started and finished at stilos, when you hit the road at the other end turn right and there is a taverna where we had greek salad and chips.
Very welcome after a sweaty 2 3/4 scramble.
This is our favorite walk on the island so far!
So well marked with red and white paint to guide you! I would say to you need reasonable fitness to enjoy this one
Note, we did see a sign at the stilos end for a taxi, of you are unsure of the heat/ your ability it may be an idea to take the number. We didn't need it so don't know if it's still in service

"Beautiful gorge, went walking here and it was worth it. One thing: if you’re a slow walker or have people with you that need a lot of rest or walk slow take more time. In the reviews most people say it takes around 2 to 3 hours but we had some people with us that didn’t have a high pace and it took around 4,5 hours. But still worth it. (Take lots of water with you, when you think: this is enough. Take another bottle)"

"june 2025: the route is very well marked (at least for Stylos to Katochori direction). If you follow the red/white markings (path of least resistance) you don't really need to use your hands (except for 2 small ladders), and it's definitely not a "rock climbing" route like some reviewers mention. Recommended for fit adults only, as it follows a dry bouldery river bed where progress is slow (the terrain is rocky and not a beaten footpath). Lots of flowers and goats. Being oriented W-E it receives less shade than other N-S canyons like Imbros, so avoid the midday heat in summer. Allow 3 hours for the way out and about the same for the way back (mostly unpaved roads). Do not go if you can't use a map to figure out the return route."
