Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Garden of Heroes to be an inspiring and historically significant site, deeply appreciating the commemoration of Greek heroes and national heritage. While the grounds are well-curated, some reviewers note a lack of facilities and suggest the area could benefit from further maintenance and investment to enhance the visitor experience.

"There is something inspiring about the way the Greeks commemorate their national heritage, and treat their heroes!
The Garden of Heroes in Messolonghi is certainly an impressive and inspiring garden in this regard. A tour through the garden paths, which are dotted with countless memorial corners, statues and monuments, inspires awe and a lot of appreciation for the Greek heritage, and the heroism of the city's residents, during the battle against the Turks in the Greek War of Independence.

During the Greek uprising that broke out in 1821, the local people killed the Turkish governor and liberated Mesolongi.
As a result, in 1825, the Turkish sultan sent a military force to reconquer the city.
The Turks besieged the city for nearly a year and the residents of the city were forced to fight hunger and epidemics without any means and without any external assistance.
(Except for a few dozen heroes, who came to help from different countries, inspired by Lord Byron, whose statue is placed in the garden.)

On the night of April 10, 1826, the city's residents decided to break the Turkish siege and formulated a plan for escape. But the plan was passed on to the Turks by a local traitor, and the Turkish forces waited for them. During the heroic battle that developed, Many of the city's residents, including women and childrenת were killed.
In memory of the battle, a memorial parade is held every year, on Sunday, of the week before the Greek Pascha, a parade that is ending in the Memorial Garden.

In April 2026, a special ceremony will be held to mark the 200th anniversary of the event.
Bottom line: When you visit this sacred town, do not miss this historical heritage site that commemorate the heroism and the courage of the brave residents of Mesolongi!"

"Garden of heros is an interesting monument to visit and spend time, if you are near.

It has the graves of popular people who fought in a battle.

It hasn't any restrooms or other facilities, but a half destroyed playground full of rust."

"A good preserved and maintenance garden full of historical people of modern Greece people and all those filellelines including the most famous Byron! Definitly worth the time and trip!"
