Mochlos - Building of the Izhevsk Arms Plant Administration. Built in 1890, it was actually the brain center of the Izhevsk Arms Plant. 17 heads of the plant — generals of the Russian Empire — worked there. It was in this building that the development and production of the three-line Mosin rifle was managed. At various times, the building of the plant administration was visited by prominent figures of that era. The poet and writer Boris Pasternak and the designer Sergei Mosin himself were here. In Soviet times, the "red commissars" and new directors of the plant sat in the building. Destroyed in 2010.

Hidden gem in Crete… Mochlos ♡ Tipped by a former colleague of mine who used to live and work in Crete for 12 years. I am very grateful to her, because this is such a nice little village🏠! Exactly opposite Mochlos is the island of Psilos, also called Agios Nikolaos. This island was already inhabited in the year 3600 BC. On Psilos, which is 250 metres from the shore, you can see the ruins of yes...

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Exploring Eastern Crete from Mochlos

While Mochlos offers a serene escape, its true potential is unlocked when used as a base for exploring the diverse landscapes of eastern Crete. Renting a car is almost essential for this, as public transport is sparse. The drive to nearby towns like Sitia (approx. 30 minutes) reveals a larger hub with more amenities and a beautiful Venetian harbor. Further afield, the palm forest of Vai Beach offers a unique tropical feel, and the ancient Minoan palace of Zakros provides a significant archaeological experience. Don't miss the rugged beauty of the Sitia Geopark, with its dramatic gorges and traditional villages. InstagramReddit

For those interested in history, the region is rich with Minoan sites, including the aforementioned Zakros and the smaller settlement on Psilos Island opposite Mochlos. The journey itself through the eastern Cretan countryside is a pleasure, with olive groves, vineyards, and stunning coastal vistas. Plan your days to include scenic drives, stops at local bakeries for bougatsa (a sweet pastry), and perhaps a visit to a traditional rakadiko (a place serving raki and meze). Instagram

Remember that eastern Crete is less developed for mass tourism than the west, which is part of its charm. This means you'll encounter more authentic experiences and fewer crowds, allowing for a more immersive exploration of Cretan culture and nature. Embrace the slower pace and the genuine hospitality you'll find in this less-traveled corner of the island. Instagram

The Culinary Delights of Mochlos

Mochlos is a haven for seafood lovers, with its waterfront tavernas serving the freshest catch of the day. The proximity to the sea means you can often enjoy fish that was swimming just hours before. Look for dishes like grilled octopus, calamari, and a variety of local fish prepared simply with olive oil, lemon, and herbs to let the natural flavors shine. Dimitris Tavern is frequently cited as a must-visit for its quality and authentic Cretan hospitality. Instagram

Beyond seafood, the tavernas in Mochlos offer a taste of traditional Cretan cuisine. This includes hearty dishes made with local ingredients like wild greens (horta), flavorful cheeses, and the ubiquitous Cretan olive oil. Don't shy away from trying dakos, a refreshing salad made with barley rusks, tomatoes, feta or mizithra cheese, and olive oil. Many places also offer mezedes, small plates perfect for sharing and sampling a variety of flavors. Instagram

When dining in Mochlos, embrace the relaxed atmosphere. Meals are meant to be savored, often accompanied by local wine or tsikoudia (a strong spirit similar to raki). The experience is as much about the setting – the gentle sound of waves, the sea breeze, and the stunning views – as it is about the food itself. It’s a true taste of the Mediterranean lifestyle.
